As my due date approaches for baby #2, I’ve been going on a major nesting spree. And it goes well beyond the typical Spring cleaning and putting the nursery together! I’m talking planning out our bills and expenses for the next month and a half, scheduling content for my Instagram page, and stocking up on household essentials.

I pretty much have the next two months of our lives ready to go, all in the name of making my life easier so I can focus on our new little baby.

When I was pregnant with my first son, it was all new to me and I wasn’t sure what to expect, or just how hard it was going to be for the first few weeks. Not to mention, we lived with my in-laws, so I wasn’t managing an entire house. I didn’t need to worry about stockpiling toilet paper or having plenty of groceries. There were 4 adults in the house that were more than willing to make a grocery run if I needed something.

This time is different, and even though my husband finally graduated nursing school and has some more free time, there’s still a lot that I’m in charge of, and that I enjoy taking care of.

We’re set on baby items! We checked the final item off of our baby checklist a few weeks ago. If you want a list of things you need for a new baby, take a look at that post, along with my baby budget worksheets.

When To Stock Up on Household Items Before Baby Comes

This is entirely up to you. If you see a sale going on when you’re only 12 weeks pregnant, why not take advantage, right? Personally I waited until about 34 weeks along, and it was a little early for us. We ended up dipping into some of the stockpile and it had to be replaced.

If you’re a master couponer, then start early! It doesn’t really matter, as long as it gets done before the baby comes. If you go into labor before making your grocery run, at least have a grocery list ready to send someone to the store with!

Everyone’s shopping list is going to look different. This is what ours looked like, along with a few extras that we don’t personally use, but I know others do.

For those of you that like to make your own homemade cleaners and household products, I would sit down and make a list of each item you make, along with the shelf life.

Start with items with the longest shelf life, of course, and work your way through! What I ended up doing was simply creating a spreadsheet with the cleaners and products I make, which ingredients they use, and when I need to make a new batch for the house. I organized my herbs and ingredients so they’re easy to grab. It’s been super helpful already! I wish I’d thought of it sooner!

When you’re preparing for your postpartum recovery and scrambling around checking all the last-minute things off of your to-do list, you might also consider making some freezer meals!

I’m all about prepping for baby in every possible way, so you can make the absolute most of your time during those first few weeks. I always recommend that moms prepare their homes for baby (as well as their recovery), instead of focusing solely on baby. I know, I know. It can easily slip your mind. But trust me, baby will benefit from a Mama that’s able to eat enough calories because she has groceries. Your baby will have more time to snuggle and get to know you if your pantry is stocked!

What did your baby preparation shopping list look like? Were there any non-baby items you stocked up on that I missed? Let me know in the comments!
