Ever since we moved out to the woods, I’ve been searching for remedies for itching rashes and irritated skin. We can thank all the new weird bugs for that!

I made my own breastmilk lotion back when my son was a baby, because it was the best homemade anti-itch cream for eczema that I felt was gentle enough for newborn skin. The ingredients found in this cream are natural, and suitable for adults and kids alike! Or, you know, anyone who’s uncomfortable rubbing breastmilk on their skin.

This is a great itch relief cream for bug bites or general itchy rashes. It soothes your skin and stops the itchiness almost immediately. Calendula is my go-to herb for rashes and most skin irritations.

How To Make Homemade Anti-Itch Cream

1. Infuse Almond Oil With Dried Calendula

For cold infusions: Add oil and dried calendula to a jar and allow to infuse for at least 6 weeks.

For heat infusions: There are a few ways to do this. You can add the oil and calendula to a crockpot, a pot on the stove, or in a double boiler. Heat the oil and flowers and simmer for about an hour.

2. Add Beeswax, Infused Almond Oil, and Shea Butter To A Double Boiler

Once you have your infused oil ready, add it to a double boiler, along with the beeswax and shea butter.

3. Heat Until Mixture Is A Liquid

Heat the ingredients slowly until everything is melted.

4. Allow To Cool

Once melted, take the mixture off of the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. You don’t want it to set, but you don’t want it to be piping hot either.

5. Add Arrowroot Powder and Bentonite Clay, And Mix

Stir in the arrowroot powder and bentonite clay, and mix thoroughly. a

6. Add Essential Oils of Your Choice

Add about 10-20 drops of the essential oils of your choice. Patchouli, peppermint, and lavender are my favorites!

7. Mix and Pour In Jars

Give it one last good mix, and pour into jars.

And you’re done! Store these in a dark, cool place with the lid tightly screwed on, and they should last 6-8 months.

This cream is great on bug bites and eczema. Be sure to test it out on a small patch of skin before slathering it on. Remember, natural doesn’t always mean safe. You can be allergic to anything. It would be heartbreaking if you were allergic to the ingredients in this recipe, but it is possible.

I will tell you, I use this on my son when his skin gets dry and itchy, and I apply it on bug bites immediately after they happen, which soothes the burning and itching every time. As my baby bump grows, I’ve been applying it every so often to my itchy stomach. Usually my DIY belly butter does the trick, but on days where it’s super itchy, I’ll add this on later in the day.

As always, speak with a medical professional before trying a new cream or home remedy, especially on inflamed skin.
