With two large lab puppies in our house 75% of the time, it gets stinky – fast. I feel like we’re constantly buying carpet powder, candles, wax melts, you name it. It doesn’t take long for that distinct dog smell to come creeping back in.

Every 3 days I’m sprinkling the carpet powder throughout the house like a maniac, desperate to get that petting zoo smell out.

Like many of my DIY household products, I’ve been wanting to share this for a long time, but I needed to make sure the recipe was perfect. I bought the biggest box of baking soda you’ve ever seen, and got to work.

You can simply add a few drops of essential oil into a jar full of baking soda and it will work just fine. But when you have a pack of animals and toddlers in and out of the house, you might need something a little stronger. Which is why I started getting creative.

So, I got to thinking, ‘Why use up a bunch of lavender essential oil, when you can use real lavender petals? It’s all going to be sucked up in the vacuum anyway!’

The great thing about this DIY carpet powder recipe is it’s 100 percent natural. I wanted to create a Borax-free version that wouldn’t use too much essential oils, and was powerful enough to eliminate dog odor and keep our house smelling fresh. I still don’t recommend pouring it right next to your toddler, since inhaling any little baking soda particles can’t be great – but I don’t worry about this recipe nearly as much as store-bought carpet powders.

Dried lavender smells better than lavender essential oil in my opinion, though both have a strong, beautiful scent. Lemons and lemon juice are commonly used in natural homemade cleaning products because they’re high in citric acid. Plus, the strong smell lasts.

You can make a shaker with a mason jar, a nail, and a hammer.

Sprinkle the powder on your carpet and let it sit for about 20 minutes before vacuuming.

Melaleuca essential oil is great for cleaning, and it smells fresh. It’s completely optional in this recipe though, and the carpet powder smells wonderful with just baking soda, lemon peel, and lavender flowers.

I chose to make a borax-free recipe because I’m still on the fence about whether or not it truly is natural. Crunchy Betty wrote an article about Getting To The Bottom of Borax that I found helpful.

Bottom line – I decided to go without it for this recipe, because it’s simply not necessary. The point of making your own carpet powder is to go natural and cut costs.

  1. Lovely I love the idea of lavender pedals! But I can’t help thinking, essential oil is still oil, and if you’re using it every week, you’re still adding oil to your carpet and while it smells good for a little while, which is really just masking, it would attract more dirt, so you would be stuck in a perpetual cycle of keeping up with the carpet!

  2. This is genius!! I’ve never thought about using actual lavender instead of the essential oil. We have professional carpet cleaners deep clean the carpets all throughout our house once a year. I really think this does wonders in helping to keep it clean (plus they use green-certified methods and solutions) but I’m also looking for something to use in between their visits to keep our house smelling clean and fresh. I can’t wait to try your mixture! Thank you so much!!
