Paper Bag Bear Cave Craft for Kids
Looking for hibernation activities for your preschooler? This paper bag bear cave craft is perfect for an animal habitat theme, or a bear theme!
This started out as a simple muddy animal painting project, and turned into a full on cave art project and hibernation discussion with my preschooler.
Originally, I intended on setting my son up with some white paper, brown paint, and a bear figurine for some process art. I wanted to allow his imagination to run wild as he pretended the bear was muddy.
While I was setting the station up, I saw the paper bags on my dining table, since we were doing several other paper bag crafts during this unit. On a whim, I grabbed a bag, rolled the sides down, and cut a hole out for the mouth of the cave, and set it next to the white paper.
It didn’t occur to me that my son would want to do anything other than pretend the bear was going to his cave for hibernation, but my son blew me away by painting the entire cave!

Paper Bag Bear Cave Craft for Toddlers & Preschoolers
Here he is, making muddy footprints with the bear’s paws. This was the original idea for our art project.
It was his own idea to grab a paintbrush and start painting the cave! He’s going through a phase where he very much wants his art to look realistic, so the brown paint was perfect. I offered other colors, but he insisted that he just needed “mud.”
I allowed the cave to dry on the kitchen table and it’s now in his room on a shelf, as a toy that he’s proud he made! I’m now officially obsessed with paper bag crafts!
They’re a hit over here, and seeing them being played with for several weeks has been a plus. That’s longer than he plays with some store-bought toys!
